So far in 2017, the United States has experienced major hurricanes, dozens of wildfires, widespread droughts, and multiple earthquakes. The importance of being well prepared has never been greater, especially for senior residents, who often require certain considerations such as medication or oxygen.

Seniors are especially vulnerable during natural disasters, that's why emergency preparedness for older adults increases their safety during a natural disaster. Seniors who need care are especially vulnerable during an emergency because they can’t easily get around and often have special healthcare needs.

Creating an emergency kit and plan takes some effort, but it can mean the difference between developing a serious health issue or surviving the disaster unharmed.

We share 4 important steps you can use to help your older adult prepare for the next natural disaster.

1. Build an emergency kit
It’s critical that your older adult has the food, water, medicine, and supplies they’ll need to survive an extended power or water outage.

Important Survival Basics

One gallon of clean drinking water per person, per day. Dehydration is one of the most dangerous aspects of the post-disaster recovery process.

At least one full week of food that requires no refrigeration and won’t go bad due to exposure.

Batteries and flashlights to help alleviate dangerous low-light conditions at night without power.

A well-stocked first aid kit.

Sanitary wipes in case you have no access to clean water for bathing.

A full gas tank, disasters commonly take out power for gas stations as well, resulting in a fuel storage that can last days or even weeks.

Clean and dry clothing to last for at least a full week.

All necessary medication with a minimum of one full weeks’ worth of extra medication on hand.

A simple generator if your medication requires refrigeration to ensure that it doesn’t go bad while the power is out. If a generator isn’t an option you should speak with neighbors or your pharmacist for options.

Prepare medical supplies that are specific to any conditions you may suffer from. It is recommended that you place all of these in a single medical kit.

Keep copies of important information like:

A list of prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and orders for medical equipment – including dosage, treatment, and allergy information

Medical insurance and Medicare or Medicaid cards

Contact information for doctors, family, friends, hired caregivers, and other people in their support network

Write down any emergency contact numbers, you likely won’t be able to charge your cell phone so you may need them on hand.

Withdraw enough cash to pay for several meals, groceries, or gas. Chances are that any store that reopens won’t have immediate use of their card machines.

Additional Steps to Take

*Important* If you use oxygen, ensure that the power company is aware before any disaster hits if possible, they will strive to restore your power quickly as an emergency priority.

Ensure that any pets have excess food and clean water to last at least a week.

Freeze water bottles and leave them in your freezer to help food stand longer.

Fill your washing machine with ice to help perishables last up to a week without power. Bonus, the water will drain directly out of your washing machine, so no cleanup.

Plan ahead for refrigerated medications for diabetes – talk with the pharmacist or doctor about emergency options

Extra batteries for devices like hearing aids or wheelchairs

An extra pair of eyeglasses

Catheters, feeding tube, or ostomy supplies, etc.

2. Form a support network
You might not always be nearby to help your older adult when disaster strikes. That’s why it’s essential to create a support network of trusted neighbors, relatives, and friends who could step in during an emergency.

Familiarize them with your older adult’s needs. Make sure everyone knows which medications, supplies, and medical devices are important, where they’re kept, and how to use them. Also, give them a copy of the emergency plan and access to your senior’s residence.

3. Create an emergency plan
Depending on the type of disaster, it could be safer to either evacuate or shelter in place. Nature is unpredictable, so prepare one plan for sheltering in place and another for evacuating.

Written plans are best for handing out and reviewing with everyone in your senior’s support network. That way everyone will be clear on what to do and where to go. And if you’re separated, you’ll know where to find your older adult.

If they need routine treatments in a clinic or hospital (like dialysis), talk to the service provider about what to do and where to go for back-up care during an emergency. Be sure to include that information in the emergency plan.

4. Make sure federal benefits payments are accessible and secure
Seniors who depend on Social Security or other federal benefits can run into trouble if they rely on mailed payments.

During emergencies or evacuations, mail services can be interrupted for days or weeks. Even worse, checks could get stolen. To prevent financial problems and fraud, make sure your older adult is receiving their benefits electronically.

Important: Seniors who are still getting a paper check for Social Security or other federal benefit payments are out of compliance with the law.

How to switch to electronic benefits payments:

Choose to get payments either by direct deposit to a bank or credit union account or to a Direct Express® prepaid debit card account. If your older adult has a bank account, direct deposit is the best option.

Sign up for direct deposit to a bank account by contacting the U.S. Treasury Electronic Payment Solution Center at (800) 333-1795, signing up for direct deposit online (select the direct deposit option), or signing up through your local bank or credit union.

Sign up for the Direct Express® card by contacting the U.S. Treasury Electronic Payment Solution Center at (800) 333-1795.

Next step: Print or save FEMA’s emergency preparedness tips for older adults

After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the United States offered Temporary Protected Status in order to help the people from Haiti relocate to the United States. Over the years this Temporary Protected Status has been extended multiple times. It was set to expire again in July but has been extended for 6 months.

There are many questions regarding the change to the Haiti Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and for this reason American In-Home Care - through our Advocate and Whitsyms brands - are sponsoring informational meetings with an immigration attorney Patricia Elizee, Esq. over the next 2 weeks to help those impacted by the changes to TPS. Ms. Elizee will be presenting the event in both English and Creole.

Both events will include Question & Answer segments. Please share this with anyone you know who may be affected by TPS.

June 30th | 2:00-6:00 PM @ The Kiwanis Club, Lauderdale Lakes, FL

July 7th | 4:00 - 8:00 PM @ Salem Community Church, Lake Worth, FL

Contact (561)-808-8434 or (954)-788-4555 to RSVP for one of the events.

Have you thanked a nurse lately? Nurses are essential to caregiving: they are the ones who act as liaison between patients and doctors, making every step of medical processes more personable, easy, and ultimately effective. They provide education about treating and preventing illness, assist in caregiving, and give emotional and physical support for their patients.

In fact, we love our nurses so much that, according to a Gallup poll, we rated them as the most honest and ethical professionals for 15 years in a row. They are with us from the moment we are born through our last days, cheering us through our joys and helping us through our sorrows.

Nurses Week 2017 Theme

We may not thank our nurses for all of their hard work as often as we should, but take advantage of the opportunity to show the special health care providers in your life that you care from May 6-12 week during National Nurses Week 2017. The theme for this year’s annual appreciation week is “Nursing: The Balance of Mind, Body, and Spirit,” in recognition of this year’s American Nursing Association theme of the “Year of the Healthy Nurse.”

These themes recognize a common irony among nurses: Although they spend most of their time caring for others, nurses often have a hard time caring for themselves. Studies have shown that nurses suffer from musculoskeletal disorders, are at a greater risk of acquiring tuberculosis and blood-borne pathogen infections, and have more occupational allergies than the general public. In addition, one study found that they have an 8% higher rate of depression than at the general population. In A Daybook for Nurses, author and doctor Sharon Hudacek sums up this irony, saying, “Bound by paperwork, short on hands, sleep and energy… nurses are rarely short on caring.”

How can we help our nurses?

Luckily, many hospitals, doctors offices, and other healthcare outlets are starting to recognize the importance of providing stress-relief and holistic health practices for nurses at work, like Tai-Chi and yoga classes during lunch breaks, on-site farmers markets, and professional support groups. These benefits aim to not only improve the health and well-being of individual nurses, but the quality of care they are able to provide their patients.

National Nurses Week is one more way that nurses’ hard work is gaining recognition. If you have a special nurse or caregiver in your life, help them achieve balance of mind, body, and spirit by providing them some caregiving of their own. Pamper them with a gift card for a massage, offer to bring a home cooked meal or meal-prep (like a jar of various beans and spices for a healthy just-add-water soup), or sit down and have an open conversation with them about what their needs are and if there’s anything you can do to help meet them.

It’s never too early or too late to tell your caregivers how much you appreciate them!

If your loved one needs a regular caregiver, including live in care Orlando nursing services, consider bringing a qualified care provider into your home. American In-Home Care always refers qualified, screened, care providers, included Registered Nurses, who are compassionate and ready to help. Contact us at 1-844-505-0004 to schedule your free in-home consultation to discuss which care options are right for you and your family.

Happy Birthday to us!

We are proud to be celebrating 25 years of service and excellence at American In-Home Care! From our humble beginnings offering companion care in Central Florida in 1992, we have grown to offer affordable, flexible, and reliable in-home care throughout the state of Florida, now reaching over 92% of Floridians with our services.

American In-Home Care has expanded through opening new offices and by acquisition, to include Whitsyms Nursing Service, Advocate Home Care Services, and Douglas Health Services. While we are now one of the largest Nurse Registries in Florida, we still maintain our personal touch through dedicated local Client Care teams and leadership.

We are proud of our achievement and are grateful to everyone who has made this possible; our clients, our employees, the independent care providers we refer, healthcare professionals and others who put their trust in us. Over the next year we will be celebrating our achievement with special events, giveaways, and offerings, so like us on Facebook and sign up for our newsletter to stay up to date! Thank you for letting us care for you, and cheers to another 25 years!

With so many of our clients suffering from this illness, we all feel the need to help find a cure to improve their lives and the lives of their loved ones. As devastating as this disease is, it was an inspirational morning with many messages of hope. The Advocate team raised over $1000 to help contribute to the Walk goal of $300,000. At last count the goal has been exceeded with a total raised to date of $325,000.

Douglas Health Services, LLC of Vero Beach enhances company's market position

February 23, 2016 – American In-Home Care, LLC (“AIHC”) has completed the acquisition of Douglas Health Services, LLC (“Douglas”) of Vero Beach, FL. AIHC, a Silverhawk Capital Partners (“Silverhawk”) portfolio company, has now completed five acquisitions in the State of Florida since its launch in September 2013, and can now serve over 90% of the 65+ population there.

Douglas, like AIHC, provides referral and administrative support services for clients that prefer to age in place by continuing to live in the comfort and familiarity of their own home. The companies refer comprehensively screened, credentialed, and insured independent care providers who offer companion, homemaker and personal care services on hourly and daily schedules, that are determined through assessment and consultation.

By adding Douglas, a respected and well established personal care service company that was founded in and based in Vero Beach, AIHC has strengthened and expanded its presence in one of its existing markets. “Our goal in the important Vero Beach market was to find a company with a history of leadership in providing services to all the constituencies we serve,” commented Doug Hollman CEO and President of AIHC, “Douglas Health Services met all of our criteria. They are respected and trusted by their clients, by local health care and other professionals who refer our services, and by the independent care providers that deliver these essential and needed services. We are very pleased to have Douglas as part of American In-Home Care.

September 9, 2015 – American In-Home Care, LLC (“AIHC”) has completed the acquisition of Advocate Home Care Services (“Advocate”), of Lauderhill, FL. This represents the fourth acquisition by AIHC since its inception in September 2013. With the addition of Advocate, American In-Home Care, a Silverhawk Capital Partners (“Silverhawk”) portfolio company, is now one of the largest independent in-home care providers in Florida serving over 90% of those 65 and older in the state.

Advocate’s service areas are both complimentary and expansionary for AIHC, with the Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Lake Worth, and Naples offices adding to its market coverage in South and Southwest Florida. The Vero Beach, Tampa, and St. Petersburg offices serve new markets for the company. Like AIHC, Advocate provides caregiver referral and administrative support services for clients that prefer to continue living in the comfort and safety of their own home. The company helps clients accomplish this goal by referring comprehensively screened, credentialed, and insured independent caregivers who provide companion, homemaker and personal care services.

“As we continue to execute against our strategy of creating a major presence in the independent living and personal care services industry, we were looking for a company that served the right markets, with the right philosophies, and the right people. Advocate more than met that criteria”, said Doug Hollman CEO and President of AIHC. “We arepleased to now be able to take our service model into new marketslike Tampa Bay, and expand our coverage along the Treasure Coast to better serve clients, referral sources, and independent caregivers who value our approach that is represented by choice, affordability, and personalized service”,
